Mandai Wildlife Group x MFA Boston x Audubon

Where Nature Meets Masterpiece: An Immersive Avian Journey

FreshO2 × The National Gallery

The Brief

Mandai Wildlife Group needed a family-friendly cultural activation to accompany the opening of Bird Paradise and Mandai Wildlife West. The challenge was to connect John James Audubon’s nineteenth-century bird studies in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston collection with a contemporary conservation setting and make the works engaging for visitors of different ages.

ARTiSTORY's Role

ARTiSTORY brought together Mandai Wildlife Group and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and developed Take Flight as an interactive outdoor experience. We selected relevant Audubon works, created the experience concept and interpretation, and translated two-dimensional collection material into creative briefs for large-scale installations linked to birds, habitats and conservation.

The Collection

Three installations were presented at Mandai Wildlife Reserve: four handcrafted paper birds displayed in transparent egg forms, a large walk-in nest and a three-dimensional pop-up book inspired by The Birds of America. The selected species could also be encountered at Bird Paradise, connecting the historical artworks with living birds.

The Outcome

Take Flight opened on 19 May 2023 and ran through 16 July 2023 alongside the launch of Bird Paradise. The activation introduced MFA Boston’s Audubon material to families and visitors in Singapore, combining art, play and environmental learning in an accessible outdoor format.
